WP1: Requirements and use case development
The objective of this work package is to elicit the requirements to the MOVING platform from the two use cases by applying a human-centered design approach. In addition, we will implement the two uses cases using the MOVING platform. For requirements elicitation, we apply a mixed-methods design and use focus groups, interviews and other methods for formative evaluations like participatory design in early phases of the project (particular in year 1). Subsequently, we will apply user logging and summative studies in order to investigate the effectiveness of certain design decisions of the MOVING platform. To this end, we will define hypotheses such as impact of a design decision on the learning effectiveness and investigate the hypotheses by quantitative measures. The MOVING platform developed in WP3 will be instrumented with a logging mechanism that allows to extract user patterns and general interaction patterns. Statistical analyses will be conducted in order to investigate the efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction of certain design decisions and to reject or support the hypotheses.
WP2: Didactic and curricula development
This work package aims at providing an empirically justified innovation training curriculum that consists of different materials and resources. To achieve this, we will first develop and apply various methods to (a) evaluate and measure prior-knowledge and learning outcomes of different target groups and (b) to guide users through a selfregulated training process that supports the transfer of newly learned knowledge to working-settings. Furthermore, this work package will produce curricula for the training of data-savvy information professionals from different disciplinary background. In relation to these curricula, a set of educational materials will be produced. This step will also include the development of a working concept (a) for the reuse of existing materials as well as (b) for the social production of new content by the platform users/the community. Finally, we focus on the development of concrete didactical concepts to translate the specified curricula in real training scenarios and to implement the training materials in the process of platform usage.
WP3: Data processing and data visualisation technology
This work package provides dedicated technology components for the MOVING platform developed in WP4. This includes harvesting content such as scientific publications and their metadata from open archives as well as crawling websites relevant to professional activities. In addition, particular attention will be given on collecting social media content such as blogs as well as multimedia content like videos. All textual content will be indexed and made available using a scalable information retrieval engine. In addition, semantic concepts will be extracted to enable more enhanced retrieval and data visualisation (e.g. network visualisation). The multimedia content will be processed and provided in smaller units like segments of the video clips. Finally, the work package will develop a logging mechanism for easily instrumenting the MOVING platform as well as provide an analytics package to derive user interaction patterns from the obtained logs. These patterns will be used to assess the training outcomes and provide user guidance developed in WP2. The content harvested and crawled in this work package will be stored in the MOVING platform.
WP4: Iterative MOVING platform development
The objective of this work package is the technical specification of the MOVING platform, the definition of the collaborative development process of the project and the iterative implementation of the MOVING platform. To this end, the existing eScience platform will be used and extended, covering both use cases defined by MOVING. The platform is available under open source license and already successfully hosts 25 projects. Today’s features of the platform are: create account, connect with people even by video chat and direct messaging, project management tool (create project, tasks, calendar, etc.), etherpad for collaborative writing, also for tablets, telco system for video chat and others. The existing platform will be extended by modeling, representing and “execution” of curricula and the creation, presentation and completion of trainings (created in WP2) as well as advanced search capability and novel data visualisations techniques (developed in WP3) and the capability for linking the user management data with existing institutional IT-environments. In addition, this WP instruments the MOVING platform with a logging mechanism that connects with the log analysis dashboard developed in WP3.
WP5: Dissemination and exploitation
The main objective of WP5 is to assure the sustainability of project’s results by their appropriate dissemination and elaborating an exploitation strategy. The dissemination will include a.o. the publication of results in lead journals, presentation at scientific and professional conferences and the development of the project web site. Along with the exploitation strategy, the sustainability of results will also be based on building a community of users of the platform.
WP6: Project Management
The goal of WP6 is to plan and undertake all necessary activities for the project’s effective coordination.
